Earlier today I attended a Sunday Coffee Hour at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Today the topic of conversation was Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. Local educator/artist Daniel Cosentino was nice enough to share his experiences from attending the event this past December.
Looking at the photo above all I can think is “hectic convention center” and I have been to a few conventions over the last few years. While I was a student at RIT I represented SPAS at PMA two years in a row in Las Vegas and a few years ago I dropped in at PDN PhotoPlus in NYC. Honestly there really isn’t a difference is there? Rather then trying to sell the latest SLR or color-correcting software, the Art is the product at an Art show. Product.
This March I plan on attending PULSE New York as well as The Armory Show 2010. I am excited to experience first hand the mood of these events. From my stance, I am a recent college graduate with way too many student loans. Buying art is obviously not my motive. As a young artist, just viewing the art and being part of any resulting dialogue be it down in the city or in my local art community is exciting and enough of a reason to attend such events.
Daniel shared the video below with us towards the end of his presentation. It’s about the Rubell Family Collection and the exhibition Beg Borrow and Steal they put up for Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. I think my favorite part of the article is the reasoning behind the title of the exhibition, “The title of the exhibition was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s quote “Good artists borrow, great artists steal”. I’m just a sucker for a good quote.
I found out today via another guest at the talk that an exhibition of Guillermo Kuitca‘s work will be at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery next month! “Guillermo Kuitca: Everything, Paintings and Works on Paper, 1980-2008” will be opening on February 19th.
Overall it was a nice day. The sun was out for a bit here in ROC and it actually hit 40! Yep, nice day.
I would also like to point out that this is the fastest turn-around-time for me in terms of blogging an event! Normally I start out my posts with something like “Last week…” or “A few days ago…” even “A couple of months ago…” What can I say? Today I am just on top of things!
