return to the darkroom

Darkroom at Genesee Center

Last week I returned to the darkroom! It was amazing. The last time I printed in the darkroom was in 2007-ish? So many years ago!

I have been talking about returning to the darkroom for nearly a year – I finally got the kick in the butt I needed! One of my instructors at work was unable to teach a pinhole camera event last night so I jumped at the opportunity. I LOVE pinhole cameras. So fun! More about the event in a later post…

It was great being back under the safelights with the smell of fixer in the air. I picked up a couple of rolls of Ilford HP5 Plus and plan on shooting them tomorrow so I can process the film on Monday. Again, it’s been several years since I processed film. Wish me luck!

A few weeks ago I traveled up to the ADKs to visit family. It was a much needed and overdue visit.

I feel like I’m FINALLY settling into my LIFE. That’s weird to write, but I’m not really sure how else to explain it. I’ve always been working towards some sort of goal: graduate with my BFA, graduate with my MFA, find a full-time job I really want to commit to… so many goals. I’m turning 30 next month (O M G !) and I can proudly say I’ve reached all of my goals up to this point in my life. AWESOME!

Time for new goals.

Now that I finally feel like I’ve got my life in order, now I can enjoy it! I have mixed feelings about turning 30 next month. On one hand, like I said, I’ve accomplished a lot up to this point, but then again I haven’t accomplished what 16yr old Megan thought I would have accomplished by now. I’m not married (not even close!), I don’t have any kids, I don’t own my own house… see where I’m going with this? A couple of weeks ago I started a new full-time job. MY full-time job. I love the organization I’m working with and I love what I’m doing there. FINALLY. This is what I needed.

Settling into MY LIFE now I’m looking forward to picking back up photography, letterpress, maybe take a ceramics class or two… I’m excited to create again! I’ve never craved having a camera in my hand like I do right now. I miss taking pictures. All of the above photos are from my Instagram account – photos I took while home (yes, it snowed!!) – photos taken with my iPhone. I NEED to use my film cameras again. I’m especially excited to shoot with my Hasselblad – it’s been way too long.

I have weekends off now! It’s been YEARS since I’ve had a “normal” schedule and I will be taking full advantage of it. PHOTOGRAPHY is coming back to this blog! I’m SO EXCITED.

Off to order some 120 film

Everyone who knows me, knows that xmas lights are my favorite part about this time of year. It will come to no surprise, that when I came across Gosztom Gergő’s project Karácsony után I gasped in pure amazement. For discarded objects, these lit trees make for a lovely series!

Be sure to check out his website to view more of his work and the rest of the photos from this series.

HAPPY 2013

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it is already 2013. I’m planning on graduating this May. CRAZY.

I had a great time ringing in the new year with family last night/this morning. So much fun in fact, I didn’t take a single photo!* We played dice and darts and there was plenty of good food and drinks. LOTS of laughing. It was perfect.

I’m putting together a “recap of 2012” post (kind of like I did last year for 2011) and it will be up by the end of the week. I’m still in the ADKs for an extended holiday break and have been enjoying my down time. I needed it!

How did you ring in the new year? I wish you a happy and healthy 2013!

*more on the lack of photos coming up in another post!
photo above was taken earlier this evening. dusk is my favorite time of day.
